Kickstarter Finally Arrives in Canada!

Yesterday, a significant event took place with the launch of Kickstarter in Canada. Not that there were never any Canadian companies on Kickstarter prior to this, but the workaround to manage the payment options made it onerous for many and drove people away.

Early this week, Kickstarter cofounder Yancey Strickler held a Kickstarter workshop at the The Royal Theatre on College Street in downtown Toronto, to officially mark the launch in Canada. The 450-seat theatre was packed–which is likely a good  indication of the number of Kickstarter projects we should expect to see from Canada.

When Strickler took the stage, he announced, “My Name is Yancey and I’m one of the founders of Kickstarter.”  The theatre filled with applause and whistles. “Tomorrow will be the first time Canadians will be able to launch projects on Kickstarter. We have been waiting for this for years and perhaps you have too”.

The payment system for Kickstarter Canada will be the same as the one enabled in the UK which launched in October of last year. Backers of Canadian projects will be asked for their credit card information and billing address rather than requiring them to sign-in to Amazon to use that account to pay. Like in the US, Kickstarter will take 5% of all successfully funded projects. Credit card charges will add another 3 to 5%.

Follow The Frog

This is such a wonderful, creative, funny video from the Rainforest Alliance. Obviously, the average nonprofit can’t afford to produce something of this quality, but it’s a great example of a video that takes a departure from the usual somber and conservative messaging.  Follow the Frog was named the Best Nonprofit Video of 2012 in the DoGooder Nonprofit Video Awards.
